ABSTRACT

This chapter critically examines the digitally mediated roles and uses of artworks in urban public space and contemporary urban living. It particularly considers the ways in which everyday users re-appropriate “offline” material installations and remediate the urban condition through digital media practices and online interventions. The chapter, first, conceptualizes urban public art in the digitally reconfigured/networked city—or the “Internet of Things.” Second, it discusses do-it-yourself (DIY) modes for digital public art production and engagement. Third, it analyzes the implications of digitally mediated public art practices for everyday sensemakings of the city. The chapter ends with reflections on the intersections of public art practices and digital citizenship and draws directions for further research.
