ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the concepts covered in the preceding chapters of this book. The book includes the full picture of how to put comprehension first by coordinating nine recommended practices. It begins with a description of the problems that beset comprehension achievement in the United States. Inquiry-based teaching of the comprehension problem solving (CPS) process was presented as a powerful means to foster comprehension development for all students. The book describes ways comprehension problem-solving strategies and the other comprehension practices may be integrated into the time frame of a typical school day. Opening Literacy Routines (OLRs) are hands-on, heads-on activities that engage students in using language and arts-based communication. Students practice and apply literacy concepts, strategies, and knowledge they have learned previously, including vocabulary knowledge. OLRs are diverse and serve many purposes: energize students to get mental and physical juices flowing; provide practice in CPS, including fix-ups; and Increase vocabulary and thinking fluency.
