ABSTRACT

The management of most airlines have readily appreciated the benefits to be gained from managerial specialisation. The degree to which many of them have gone is well illustrated by the organisation directory of American Airlines set out in Appendix II. Here we see passenger sales management specialised into interline, military and government, travel agency, commercial, convention and group sales. Maintenance management is specialised into maintenance personnel, production and material control, general production, production engineering, inspection and flight test. The flying organisation is divided into operations, training, performance, administration, planning and manning, dispatch, crew scheduling and recruitment.
