ABSTRACT

Captain Francisco Arnedo, Governor of the Zamboanga presidio, had shown since midday his desire to support not only the aims of the expedition but also all the people who comprised it. 1 While we were still under sail the local mayor came to pay his respects to us, and the Governor himself soon arrived on board with the few persons of note in the presidio. The return visit that we made in the evening left us in no doubt that every measure would be taken for our well-being and the rapid achievement of our objects.
