ABSTRACT

The previous evening, when forwarding the correspondence to the Governor, we had informed him of our main reasons for visiting this roadstead. Soon after anchoring I received from him a very courteous message advising me that he would arrive in person at the roadstead in a few hours time, when it would be easier for him to attend as required, with instructions and advice that might contribute to the success of our mission. Indeed, by nine o’clock he had arrived at the small town, 1 accompanied by some priests from the nearby missions, 2 but by then we had returned on board after a pleasant and productive walk through surrounding area.
