ABSTRACT

The bearings taken from the village of Laguan clearly showed that the distance from Palapag to San Bernardino Strait was not more than fifteen or sixteen leagues, as confirmed by my previous voyage in the frigate Astrea, although the charts of this coast generally showed it as being much greater. Everything urged us, therefore, to make the most of the very pleasant afternoon to continue our survey, approaching the entrance to the strait during the night and thus, with a favourable wind and tide, reaching the entrance to the port of Sorsogon the next morning. Nature appeared in her most pleasing aspect around us. The Moon seemed almost to compete with the Sun for brilliance, and the fresh [NE] Trade Wind still blowing from a cloudless sky gave the passage that security which we would not have enjoyed in calm weather, given the strong currents in the strait.
