ABSTRACT

Soon after sunrise, in bright sunlight and with a light breeze from WNW, the tide started to turn in our favour, enabling us to begin to get under way. This took the Descubierta some time and effort, not so much because of the difficulty in weighing the kedges, as for that of coming off the wind before being able to set the sails. However we managed to do it by towing her with the pinnace, as well as by the usual manoeuvres. We had to make repeated tacks towards both shores before being able to consider ourselves clear of Punta Muñoz, from where shoals extend some four or five cables offshore. 1 At nine o’clock, however, the breeze having veered to the fourth quadrant, we managed to leave them half a mile [to port] and finally to alter course to SW under full sail, with a light breeze from WNW, a fairly smooth sea and the weather fine and calm.
