ABSTRACT

The inherent value of dramatic experiences for children has been cited by many proponents of this unique art form. Several specific types of drama offer children an exciting break from their regular routine and are also ideally suited to increase fluency in a highly motivational way while providing a visual context in which children, especially those learning English, can increase their language prowess. Readers theatre can play an especially significant part in increasing fluency when it is an integral part of a comprehensive literacy program. Literature chosen for readers theatre should be drawn from tales originating from the oral tradition, poetry, or high-quality picture books suitable to be read aloud by children. Drama can be an extremely effective mode of self-expression through which children can develop fluency by way of motivated readings and rereadings of commercial, adapted, and children-authored scripts.
