ABSTRACT
The shapes of native proteins fluctuate, due to natural thermal motions. Even though these movements occur in the presence of random solvent forces, the protein’s motions are not random. Some motions are collective: the atoms move in concert with each other, not independently. Whole domains can move as a unit, for example. In allosteric responses, a stimulus at one location in the protein triggers an action elsewhere in the protein.
