ABSTRACT

A critical assessment of both the developing research on, and applications of, the criminal profiling technique is undertaken. Three core shortfalls that plague the field are identified. These relate to insufficient construct validity in examined concepts, insufficient testing of espoused paradigms, and inadequately resourced research endeavours. When considered holistically, these shortfalls collectively work to form a self-perpetuating cycle. Potential solutions are explored, including greater collaborative use of violent crime databases, such as ViCAP and ViCLAS.
