ABSTRACT

This chapter begins by placing the use of immigrant labour in the context of the needs of capital. Imperialism oppresses immigrant labour in many ways, including discrimination. The chapter provides a link between the economic and ideological levels of racism. It shows how biology is being used ideologically to legitimize racist attitudes and practices at a time of capitalist crisis. The chapter concerns the forms of discrimination within education. There is a discussion of the features of the 'assimilationist' model, which was applied to the first generation of immigrants, and the shift to the current 'multi-cultural' model. All capitalists benefit from the exploitation of immigrant labour in Britain, just as all capitalists in South Africa benefit from apartheid. The chapter summarizes the version of human nature presented by ethology and sociobiology: human behaviour is naturally selfish and territorial; this naturalness is rooted in our genetic make-up.
