ABSTRACT

Addressing human trafficking and exploitation for the purpose of reproduction is considered necessary in order to increase the visibility and awareness of human rights violations in the field of reproductive health. This chapter begins with the definition of human trafficking and the human rights concept. Further, it focuses on reproductive health (rights) and the main bioethical principles for a better understanding of the interconnectedness and complexity of the issue. The chapter outlines controversial fields of reproduction with a high risk for exploitation and human trafficking. It also discusses the issue of international commercial surrogacy, particularly highlighting the potential exploitative dimension it could take under certain circumstances. The chapter highlights the cases of "baby factories" and forced pregnancy, as awareness of the issue is still low. Finally, it explains prenatal sex selection, the lack of women, and the link to bride trafficking in more detail.
