ABSTRACT

Recognizing the humanity of each individual will enable you to approach people and their stories with compassion and respect. Good journalists are not disconnected from the world they cover. Perhaps, like many beginning journalists, you were attracted to the business because of an idealistic notion of journalism’s capacity to reform and improve society. Journalism’s capacity to cause pain may not have been as apparent. The chapter discusses the checklist: Treat people with respect and dignity, Remember the humanity of the people the authors' write about, Be sensitive about what to include and what to leave out, Remember the Golden Rule, Get it right, Know our own limits.
