ABSTRACT

What You are up against hroughout this book we’ve discussed the many different ways you can successfully carry out an investigation. But you must also consider your

limitations, and these will be defined in part by laws and ethical considerations. You may decide that the problem you need to investigate is so terrible it overrides the privacy rights of the people involved. The law might say you don’t have rights to access. Or the government might have the right to the information you gather, whether or not it ends up in a published or broadcast story. Even if you think the story is such that you can justify crossing some ethical boundaries, can you afford to cross legal ones? To make those kinds of decisions, first you need to be grounded in the laws and ethical guidelines.
