ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a cursory review of the federal government's role in onshore domestic oil and gas production. It begins with an historical overview of the federal policies that have shaped production and fracking-related technologies. It also examines more contemporary policymaking and includes a brief snapshot of proposed legislation addressing production and/or fracking. The chapter then offers the reader a brief overview of federal regulatory attention, including recent rulemaking/activities at the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Federal Railroad Administration, Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA), Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), and the Bureau of Land Management (BLM).
