ABSTRACT

This chapter deepens the understanding of intergovernmental politics by looking to the ‘local’ experiences related to oil and gas production. It provides brief anecdotes for several cities that are in the midst of the fracking-fueled oil and gas boom. Importantly, each city has actively contributed to its intergovernmental politics. For each state (Colorado, Ohio, and Texas) examined in the preceding three chapters, four cities were selected for a total of 12 cities. The selected communities present a range of intergovernmental responses. Based on the qualitative data, anxiety over emergency management/accidents, a desire for greater local control, environmental concerns, and a belief that state regulations were inadequate helped to trigger local defiance.
