ABSTRACT

It is important for leaders to assess the talent of an employee on a regular basis. Employee terminations are never easy. Telling someone how great she is and then terminating her during the same meeting never ends well. A termination meeting is one of those times in life where brevity is key. Cite the reason for the termination and, if need be, provide several examples that support why you will be parting ways. Timing matters as well. Terminating an employee during peak business hours is probably not the best in terms of timing. Give the employee time to process what is been said and to ask questions before offering to escort him out of the office. A simple handshake and a thank you may be all that is needed. This chapter explores some common mistakes to be avoided when it comes to terminating employees.
