ABSTRACT

The fact that a simple correlation identifi es a linear relationship between two variables means that we can add a best fi t line to a scatterplot of the data. This is simply a line that best represents the set of data. The strength of the correlation depends on how far the data points deviate from the best fi t line, rather than falling directly on the slope of the line. Exhibit 15.1 provides examples of a positive correlation and a negative correlation, as well as a case where the variables are not related to each other.
