ABSTRACT

This chapter begins with a brief history of the game. The sport of volleyball is growing by leaps and bounds in the United States and throughout the world. The power and intensity that characterize the state of competitive volleyball are testament to the progressive change that has taken place since its inception. As volleyball is an activity that requires both short bursts of power and moderate levels of cardiovascular endurance, both aerobic exercise and anaerobic exercise training must be included in any volleyball conditioning program. Weight training is one form of anaerobic conditioning that can be of great value to volleyball enthusiasts. Plyometrics is another anaerobic exercise that can be used in place of or along with the weight training exercises. Interval training, an aerobic training program that consists of an anaerobic component, is probably the ideal program for the sport of volleyball.
