ABSTRACT

This chapter presents a brief introduction to the game of volleyball and discusses the mental and physical skills involved in volleyball, the number of participants and their role in a game of volleyball, and the basic action involved in volleyball. Mentally, the game requires anticipation, concentration, and excellent reflexes as the ball and play often move at very rapid rates. Footwork skills are vital for optimal quickness and agility in volleyball and are particularly important for properly positioning oneself on the court. The typical indoor volleyball court is on a hardwood floor and measures 59 feet long and 29 feet 6 inches wide. Volleyball may be played according to a rally scoring method, whereby a point is awarded when either the serving or receiving team wins the rally. In many instances, games are played without officials, and players must make their own calls requiring honesty, discretion, and moral or ethical values.
