ABSTRACT

A tennis match between two players is known as singles. Doubles is a match between four players—two on each team. Mixed doubles is match pairing a man and woman on one team against a similar combination on the other team. A tennis match begins with a coin toss or spin of the racket to decide who serves first and on which ends of the court they will begin. One player serves and the point is played to its conclusion. Points are scored on every play and may be won by hitting a winner or by forcing the opponent to hit an error. In singles, a server may serve and elect to play offensively, rushing to the net and trying to end the point quickly with a volley or overhead. This is known as serve and volley tennis. In most matches, even in club tournament play, players keep their own scores and call their own lines.
