While there are no universally accepted standards for describing values of d in words, keep in mind that for most practical purposes, 3.00 (or –3.00) is the maximum value of d because the effective range of standard-deviation units is only three on each side of the mean, so an experimental group can rarely exceed a control group by more than 3.00. 1
