ABSTRACT

This chapter explains key issues and factors associated with driving and older adulthood. It describes activities of daily living in adulthood and what can be done to maintain function with age. Adolescence has been examined occasionally; movement in adulthood, seldom. Most motor developmentalists have traditionally maintained an expertise in childhood movement, giving much less attention to the motor changes and related factors of adulthood. Postural sway is a balance-related phenomenon characterized by a nearly imperceptible back-and-forth motion that assists the body in maintaining an upright or standing position. Postural sway is gradually refined across childhood and adolescence until it becomes well established, fairly early in adulthood. Older and middle adult walkers were also found to have a more flat-footed walking style compared to younger walkers as the heel strike was more plantar flexed upon heel contact.
