ABSTRACT

M ajor advances in technology and urbanization led historians to describe the 19th century as “the age of progress” (Riess, 1995). Sport progressed at a phenomenal rate as well: “[T]he international foundation was truly laid for the gigantic proportions of sport today” (Glassford & Redmond, 1988, p. 140). Inventions such as the railroad (1830), the motorcar (1885), the camera (1826), the electric lamp (1881), and the radio (1901) were among the profound technological changes contributing to the evolution of sport (Glassford & Redmond, 1988).
