ABSTRACT

A great disparity exists between what it means to have power and being powerful, particularly for women. I personally have had a love-hate relationship with power my entire life. It was a soul-searching process to find the right personal experiences to share about power for this chapter. Maybe this is partly because, despite having a lifetime of career and personal accomplishments, I would not describe myself as powerful. Yet, I absolutely believe being powerful is a vital leadership behavior. It’s also a complicated behavior that is tied to many others outlined in this book. Unfortunately, like confidence, a large body of evidence indicates that women misunderstand all that power can afford them.
