ABSTRACT

Alternative assessments tend to use formative evaluation and criterion-referenced scoring, and they tend to assess higher levels of learning or performing compared to traditional evaluation based on testing. This chapter discusses two instruments that are commonly used in authentic assessment: rubrics and questionnaires. In authentic assessment, the techniques of systematic observation and interviewing are frequently used. The chapter discusses these techniques and provides sample forms for data gathering. The technique of systematic observation has been used extensively in research on teaching and is also applicable in everyday measurement situations. Rating scales, particularly Likert-type scales, are widely used for assessing subjective qualities in the affective domain, such as attitude, comfort, and preference. The Borg Rating of Perceived Exertion Scale, or Borg Scale, has been extensively studied and proven very useful in regulating exercise intensity. Affective measurements are available to measure a variety of characteristics that are important in sport and health.
