ABSTRACT

This chapter describes a range of different perspectives on bioethics, in the hope of gaining a fuller picture of its richness and diversity. It focuses at a major influence on recent bioethics, feminist approaches, which seek to overcome the gender bias evident in health policies and in many discussions of bioethics issues. The chapter considers the contrast between cure and care in medicine, and takes up the perspective of 'care ethics'. It discusses the bioethics by describing a range of perspectives that are different in approach from a philosophical use of moral theory to deal with moral problems. However, it is important to recognize that ethical issues are not easily solved simply by a 'knock down' ethical theory or even by some core principles. The chapter also considers some of the key concepts in the feminist bioethics literature. These are: marginalization; embodiment; empowerment; and relational autonomy.
