ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the influence of appearance in greater depth. It highlights the influence of physical attractiveness on people's experiences in society, the workplace, and sport. The chapter discusses the effects of weight in the workplace, and offers an analysis of the effects of weight on fitness promotion and physical activity participation. According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and Prevention, people who are overweight or obese have a body weight that exceeds what is considered healthy for their height. The World Health Organization (WHO) points several factors that contribute to obesity, including diet, activity level, and genetics. As the Diversity Challenge illustrated, people who are considered overweight or obese encounter stereotypes, prejudice, and discrimination. These anti-fat biases have the potential to affect their well-being negatively, both inside and outside the work environment. Among adults, weight discrimination negatively affects a person's psychological well-being and overall health.
