ABSTRACT

Greg Owens closed the teachers’ lounge door and sank heavily into the chair. Removing his glasses, Greg rubbed his eyes, exhaled, and as he replaced his glasses he glanced at a slip of paper with Quinton’s home phone number. Once again, Quinton, a third grader, had been involved in a fight during physical education. When Mr. Owens had pulled the boys aside to discuss the situation, all he got was a wall of sullen silence. The other students who had witnessed the fight had told him that Travis had made a derogatory comment about one of Quinton’s family members. Travis wouldn’t admit to what he had said, and Quinton only lowered his head, looked at the ground, and had refused to speak.
