ABSTRACT

The East Street School is a K–5 inner-city school in Massachusetts. It houses approximately 350 students, who are mostly Hispanic or African American. Ms. Vincent, the physical education teacher at the school, takes great pride in how she has been able to develop the physical education program I was so nervo over the past four years. She describes her program as a skill themes program based on the movement framework. The limited facilities consist of a small indoor gymnasium (15’x 20’) and a blacktop area that can be used, weather permitting. Despite the limited facilities and equipment, Ms. Vincent has gained much respect for her program from colleagues, administrators, parents, and students. Over the years, Ms. Vincent has continued to receive a budget, which has allowed her to acquire developmentally appropriate equipment to complement the goals and objectives she has set for her program. When Ms. Vincent agreed to supervise a student teacher from her old college, one of her concerns was that it would take a very “special” person to be able to perform successfully, given the limited space and equipment.
