ABSTRACT

M any exercise professionals, physical educators, and coaches work with individuals between the ages of 5 and 18 years. This is especially true for teachers and coaches in public and private schools. In addition, the interest and participation of children in competitive sports has increased dramatically, and therefore, professionals must be knowledgeable in the areas of normal growth and development as well as the effects of exercise on young competitors. Frequently, athletes, parents, and the community at large count on personal trainers, physical educators, and coaches to advise them on the potential benefits and hazards of certain types of exercise for young populations. Responding to questions with scientifically based information affords an opportunity to dispel popular but inaccurate myths and improve the health and performance of children and adolescents.
