Smooth muscle is innervated by the autonomic nervous system and ordinarily contracts independently of voluntary control. The fibers of smooth muscle are usually long, spindle-shaped bodies, but their external shape may change somewhat to conform to the surrounding elements. Each fiber usually has only one nucleus.
