ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses Networks, which is the eighth and final pillar of the CHILDREN model of factors which influence progress towards the International Safeguards. It argues that an organisation’s progress towards the Safeguards will be strengthened by developing networks with other related organisations. It was found that more effective safeguarding systems were perceived to be developed when people and organisations worked together. Key issues are considered in terms of the challenges which this approach helps to overcome (e.g., isolation or lack of integration) as well as the challenges faced when trying to build networks (e.g., corruption or a lack of social systems). Promising practices are discussed with respect to the use of community mapping, peer learning and engaging with external networks. The case study in this chapter draws on a range of examples through considering how networks were used to deliver safeguarding at major events, how effective partnerships were developed and the role of advocacy throughout this project.
