ABSTRACT

The qualitative data collected throughout this project was analysed using thematic content analysis. The data were analysed to identify the factors which influence the causes of change. Eight pillars were identified which facilitate the development and maintenance of an effective safeguarding system and these were labelled using the acronym CHILDREN: Cultural sensitivity, holistic, incentives, leadership, dynamic, resources, engaging stakeholders and networks. This model emphasises that children should be seen as children before any other label (e.g., an elite athlete). The ways in which the project encouraged the participants to genuinely engage with children are outlined. The impact of making progress towards the International Safeguards for the experiences of children and the broader organisation are also described. This chapter sets the scene for the subsequent chapters which go into more detail regarding each of the CHILDREN pillars.
