ABSTRACT

Kinematics is an intricately patterned structure of thousands of unique triangular panels interconnected by hinges, all 3D printed as a single piece in nylon. While each component is rigid, in aggregate they behave as a continuous fabric, allowing the dress to flexibly conform and fluidly flow in response to body movement. Nervous System is a generative design studio that works at the intersection of science, art, and technology. They create using a novel process that employs computer simulation to generate designs and digital fabrication to realize products. Kinematics represents a new approach to manufacturing that integrates design, simulation, and digital fabrication to create complex, customized products. The Kinematics Dress is included in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art and the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum. Kinematics Cloth is a web app where people can design custom-fit 3D garments by sketching and sculpting in real time.
