ABSTRACT

Conceived to drive technological innovation and economic growth, the Singapore University of technology and design (SUTD) is aspiring to produce the next generation of technically grounded, multidisciplinary leaders to serve societal needs. The greenery mellows the geometric newness of the buildings. It also testifies to the environmental sustainability precepts that were built into the design, largely through passive climate control. Establishing a relationship between the new University and its context was fundamental to the design concept. Expanding education supply and quality outside Jakarta is a key focus, as demonstrated by the plans for the West Java New University. West Java New University will be a private university in the small town of Subang, 165 kilometres (100 miles) from Jakarta. While a common theme in Western universities, interdisciplinarity and collaboration are unfamiliar tenets in Indonesia. Internal areas were shaded from direct sunlight by brise-soleil and wide circulation balconies, thus reducing their dependence on air conditioning, notwithstanding Singapore's intense humidity.
