ABSTRACT

A career in event management is quite often not a choice. In both developed and developing markets many organisers of events find themselves doing the role through necessity or by accident. The good news is that anybody can become an event organiser: just like anybody can become a hotelier or restaurateur. Even parents find themselves organising the wedding of their offspring. The analogy with hotels and restaurants is appropriate because the hospitality industry is closely associated with events. To gain experience in event management, it would make sense to select a position in a closely related industry. Jobs in marketing and public relations are obvious examples that would bring one into close contact with events. Venues are possibly the easiest, quickest and most certain way to gain experience of events. There are many and various venues, so opportunities exist everywhere.
