ABSTRACT
The United States claims to be a pro-natalist society, but our social policies far from lend themselves to this conclusion. In 1993, President Bill Clinton signed the Family and Medical Leave Act of 1993 into law, which guarantees 12 weeks of unpaid maternity leave to new mothers; for women already facing financial difficulties, three months of no income is simply not a realistic possibility. Anyone who is familiar with the work of the author's co-author knows how seamlessly she weaves helpful data and real-life examples into her discussion of the philosophy and ethics of abortion. If there is nothing especially significant about sex, then the child's consent would function in much the same way it would if one were to ask a child if she would like a glass of milk. The upshot of all this is to underscore the vital role people's bodies play in their interaction with the world.
