ABSTRACT

Office work is increasingly characterized as communication work. This is, looked at cursorily, why office communication analysis is so popular among West German organizations. The widespread application of office communication analysis calls for a critical assessment of this methodology. The critical assessment of office communication analysis is based upon the critical assessment leads to some provocative conclusions on the value of this specific type of office analysis methodology. A short discussion of the economic and technical background of the development and spread of office communication analysis methodologies will precede the critical assessment of this methodology. Almost all of them proceed with some kind of rudimentary network analysis depicting the internal communication structure of an organization. Therefore it seems adequate to assess office communication analysis methodology from an organizational communication perspective. In contrast to both, the organizational communication view as well as sociotechnical perspective, office communication analysis is entirely naive with respect to the relevance of certain information for organizational conduct.
