ABSTRACT

An important aim in work related stress research is to investigate relations between work stressors and stress reactions like somatic complaints or psychological dysfunctioning. The analyses presented in this chapter are intended to carry our analyses of the validity of job analysis data somewhat further. They concentrate on convergent and discriminant validity between stressors. The chapter is based on a study of stress at work in nine different steel and automobile companies in the Federal Republic of Germany. For the measurement of stressors at work, Semmer has developed an Instrument for STress-oriented Analysis of work (ISTA). The more specific question of which stressors are related to what kind of stress reaction is investigated rather seldom. Studies on the discriminant validity of stressor measurement are an important prerequisite for this kind of specific study. Multitrait-multi-method data (MTMM data) are best analyzed with linear structural equations, in particular confirmatory factor analyses (CFA).
