ABSTRACT

Restriction endonucleases are an integral part of genetic engineering. The birth of genetic engineering and the advancement in the molecular techniques in modern research were possible due to the discovery of the restriction endonucleases. Various types of restriction endonucleases have been discovered and named according to the recognition and cleavage position sites in the DNA sequences. This chapter has focused on types of restriction endonuclease, their mechanism of action, and the interaction with DNA. At the end of this chapter, recent developments of restriction endonucleases and restriction mapping have been discussed
