ABSTRACT

This chapter aims to walk the reader through the development of a successful nonprofit organization with a focus on bereavement camps. Planning strategically is important for the early development of a small nonprofit organization such as a grief camp program. Beyond the beginning stages of development, many for-profit and nonprofit organizations use strategic planning to maintain the organization’s focus, direct changes in activities or mission, and plan for needed funding. The successful management of a nonprofit organization takes planning, collaboration, and ongoing fundraising. Many individuals who run wonderful nonprofit organizations have difficulty with “the ask”–actually asking an individual donor to support that program. Although fundraising is crucial to the success of any program, care needs to be taken in thinking about raising money in the community. Solicitations, asking for donations, and special events can be either created by the organization or created on its behalf.
