ABSTRACT

Preschool anxiety disorders are an emerging health concern and confer risk for later psychopathology and functional impairment. Thus, the preschool period represents an ideal time in development to identify anxiety disorders and implement intervention and prevention programs. The current chapter reviews data related to the epidemiology and nosology of preschool anxiety disorders. Overall, preschool anxiety disorders are diagnosed at rates similar to older children (9–19%) and demonstrate significant comorbidity and stability over time. Lastly, we discuss challenges in the assessment of preschool anxiety disorders and provide recommendations for future research.
