Signal separation is one of the most important problems in the theory of signal processing and finds application in audio [46] and image processing [37, 60], and biomedical [63] and chemical [6, 26] analysis, to cite a few examples. Signal separation is also relevant in areas other than signal processing, such as machine learning [7] and statistical analysis [39]. It is also worth mentioning that several data analysis methods that are employed to deal with a large amount of data (big data) were initially developed or refined by researchers working on the problem of signal separation [7].
