ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the issues arising from the unique intersection of the smart grid (SG) with the intelligent transportation systems (ITS) in the smart city. It deals with a discussion of the SG paradigm and provides an examination of vehicle-to-grid and grid-to-vehicle interaction, in which charging and power management strategies related to Electric vehicles. The chapter describes a presentation of vehicle-to-infrastructure and vehicle-to-vehicle, which address vehicle safety and intervehicle cooperation in the smart city. It draws on the technologies related to the management of traffic in an urban ITS and discusses related energy-savings initiative for lighting systems in an ITS. The chapter examines issues in security and privacy as it relates to smart cities, the SG, and ITS. In a smart city, the components of an ITS include the SG to provide electrical power; smart network technologies to provide communications among vehicles and infrastructure; individual vehicles and mass transit systems.
