ABSTRACT

Brightness is the primary characteristic determining projector price and quality, and projector efficiency is one key in determining the final brightness of the projected image. Typically projectors are structured with a light source separate from the image-forming element, or light valve. The light source in a projector supplies a uniform brightness distribution on the light valve. Projector technology could benefit from an improvement in both dynamic range and peak brightness of the projected image. The peak brightness of a projector also limits the type of environment in which it can be used to its full potential; the brighter the room illumination, the more lower-end detail lost, resulting in a "washed out" image. A. Pavlovych and W. Stuerzlinger, G. Damberg and Y. Kusakabe each use two light valves in series within a projector system, which reduces the dark level but also the overall brightness and efficiency of the system.
