ABSTRACT

Before launching directly into this subject, it is necessary to review briefly the differ ent ink technologies that are currently on the market, because receiver requirements are predicated on the type of ink being used. Figure 15.1 is one way to classify the different ink technologies in use today. By far, the most ubiquitous inks for desktop and larger format applications are water based. This is primarily for two reasons: aqueous inks are more environmentally friendly, and DOD thermal ink jet printheads, which account for the largest installed base of ink jet printers, require aqueous inks. Therefore the major focus of this chapter will be on receivers that are compatible with aqueous inks. We will also briefly discuss the unique requirements that are posed by the various nonaqueous ink technologies.
