ABSTRACT

The Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT) first appeared in Ahmed, Natarajan, and Rao’s pioneering paper in 1974 [1]. It has become one of the most important transformation in signal processing, second only to the Discrete Fourier Transform (DFT). DCT and its inverse transform, IDCT, are essential operations in audio, image, video coding, and have been included in several image/audio/video standard specifications, including JPEG still image compression [2], MPEG-1 Audio [3], MPEG-1/2 Video [4, 5], Dolby AC-3 Audio [6], and the ATSC Standard for HDTV [7].
