ABSTRACT

This chapter analyzes the error introduced in continuous-time amplitude quantization. It shows how amplitude quantization in continuous time can be analyzed as a memoryless transformation of continuous waveforms. The chapter focuses on the simpler but standard case of uniform spacing. It highlights spectral features of the quantization error added on bandlimited signals. The chapter discusses the effects of synchronization and time coding on the error spectrum. It also analyses the error at the output of a continuous-time digital signal processing (DSP). When the output of the continuous-time DSP is interfaced with standard data processing blocks, uniform sampling is necessary, synchronously with the clock of those blocks.
