ABSTRACT
This chapter gives an introduction into state-of-the-art technologies used in building automation. Building automation technologies were primarily used for simple control tasks, but they developed to highly complex systems. Today's Building automation systems (BASs) are crucial for large buildings. The comfort of facility users is increased and maintaining safety in buildings is a key asset. The chapter presents an overview of hierarchical models in automation system and their evolution in recent times. It discusses technologies and standards that allow a manufacturer-independent interaction, control, and visualization whereby also web-based access and interaction are addressed. The chapter explains a selection of the most important technologies and standards used in the context of building automation and presents a collection of selected technologies in the context of smart homes. For modern buildings, it is crucial that building automation technologies are able to cooperate with each other. The recent development toward an Internet of Things (IoT) also influences building automation and technologies.
